Who needs a workers' comp COI?
Almost anyone working as a subcontractor, vendor, or service provider on someone else's property will be asked for one. General contractors require COIs from every sub on a job site. Commercial landlords often require them from tenants. Many corporate clients require them from suppliers.
What's the difference between a COI and a policy?
A COI is a one-page summary that proves coverage exists. The policy itself is the contract — typically 50+ pages of terms, conditions, and endorsements. The COI shows the certificate holder enough to verify you're covered without sharing your full policy.
Can I generate a fake COI?
No. Insurance fraud is a felony in every state and most carriers can verify any COI directly with the producer listed. Always work with a licensed agent to issue legitimate certificates.
How fast can I get a COI?
If you have an active policy, usually within an hour. If you need to bind a new policy first, often same-day for most class codes. Roofing and other hard-to-place trades may take 1-2 business days.
