How is workers' comp premium calculated?

Premium = (Payroll ÷ 100) × Rate × Experience Mod

Workers' compensation insurance premium is calculated by dividing your annual payroll by 100, multiplying by the rate for your class code (set by the state rating bureau or carrier filing), and multiplying by your experience modification factor.

The rate reflects the injury risk for your industry — clerical workers (8810) might be $0.15 per $100, while roofers (5551) can exceed $20 per $100. The experience mod is a multiplier based on your past claims history; new businesses start at 1.00, and you earn credits for clean history or surcharges for losses.
